So, what should you consider first?
1. Know the plan eligibility requirements.
First things first. Find out if and when you are eligible. You must be covered by Medicare before you can be eligible for a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan. If you are uncertain about your eligibility, give us a call.
2. Find out what Medicare Supplement Plan options are available to you.
Once you are covered under Medicare, there are multiple Medicare Supplement plan types that you can choose from. Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans (also known as Medigap Plans), are offered in distinct benefit packages that are designated by letters of the alphabet (For example: Medicare Supplement Plan A, or Medicare Supplement Plan F).
There are several insurance companies that offer Medigap insurance policies in Athens, GA. However, regardless of the company that is offering the plan, benefits are required by law to be the same. This requirement was put in place to help prevent confusion within the Medicare Supplement insurance marketplace.
3. Know how much you can afford.
When choosing supplement coverage, you should always consider your budget – and not just your immediate budget. You will need to have room in your budget for a monthly premium that will likely increase over time. Generally, the more comprehensive the coverage, the higher the monthly cost of the plan.
You should weigh what plan benefits you feel you need, against benefits you feel you can do without. You may initially be drawn to a plan with all the bells and whistles. However, that plan can quickly loose its luster if it takes too much of a bite out of your budget.
All of these issues should be discussed with a Medicare Supplement expert that has experience working with the local Athens community. Give us a call today.
Interesting Medicare Fact:
You cannot sign up for Medicare whenever you want. Well, at least not without incurring a significant penalty.
More than 20 percent of Medicare eligible consumers believe you may sign up for Medicare at anytime you please, once you reach the age of 65.
Not so. The truth is, you have a 7 month initial enrollment period once you first become eligible for Medicare. This enrollment window is the ideal, and most inexpensive time to enroll.
This 7 month period begins three months before the month you turn 65, and ends three months after your 65th birthday.
There is also the general enrollment period. This period runs from January 1st, to March 31st, every year.
Lastly, there are also special circumstances in which enrollment is allowed without incurring a penalty. For example, special enrollment periods are available for those who had coverage at their place of employment and may not have needed the benefit of individual Medicare coverage when they turned 65.
Be certain you have a keen understanding of when you may enroll in Medicare. Enrolling at the wrong time could result in a higher premium – not only initially – but for as long as you are subscribed to Medicare!
